Rainbow Ribbons Quilt

These fun, funky ribbons were a breeze to make with the GO! 9″ QUBE. Join the celebration and make your own version!

Materials:

    1. AccuQuilt GO! Big, GO! Cutter or GO! Baby Fabric Cutter
    2. AQ55777 GO! QUBE Mix and Match 9″ Block.
      • Shape 3 GO! Half Sqaure Triangle – 4 1/2″ Finished Square.
      • Shape 4 GO! Quarter Square Triangles – 4 1/2″ Finished Square
    3. AQ55027 GO! Triangles in Squares – 3″ Finished.
    4. AQ55006 GO! Square 3 1/2″ (3″ Finished).
    5. AQ55109 GO! Strip Cutter – 1 1/4″ (3/4″ Finished).
    6. AQ55025 GO! Strip Cutter – 2″ (1 1/2″ Finished).
    7. AQ55017 or AQ55014 GO! Strip Cutter – 2 1/2″ (2″ Finished)
    8. Cutting Mats:
      • AQ55137 6″ x 6″
      • AQ55138 6″ x 12″
      • AQ55113 10″ x 24″ or AQ55112 6″ x 24″

    • 50cm each of light purple, dark purple, light red, dark red, light yellow, dark yellow, light green and dark green.
    • 40cm each of light aqua, and dark aqua
    • 3.5metres of what fabric
    • 1.9 metres x 1.7 metres backing fabric
    • 1.9 metres x 1.7 metres wadding

Cutting Instructions

  1. From the light fabrics – purple, red, yellow, and green cut: A. Using AQ55777 GO! Half Square Triangle – 4 1/2″ Finished Square (shape 3). Cut 2, 6″ x Width of fabric (WOF) strips. Fanfold into 5 3/4″ widths and cut 24 half square triangles  (HSTs) of each colour. B. Using AQ55027 GO! Triangle in Square -3″ finished. Cut 1, 6″ x WOF strip. Fan fold into 4 1/4″ and cut 8 triangles.
  2. From the dark fabrics – purple, red, yellow and green cut: A. Using AQ55777 GO1 Quarter Square Triangles – 4 1/2″ Finished Square (shape 4). Cut 2, 5 1/2″ WOF strips. Fanfold 3 1/2″ widths and cut 24 quarter square triangles (QSTs). B. Using AQ55027 GO! Triangle in Square – 3″ Finished. Cut 1,6″ x WOF strip. Fan fold 4 1/4″ and cut 8 triangles.
  3. From dark aqua cut: A. Using AQ55777 GO! Quarter Square Triangles – 4 1/2″ Finished Square (shape 4). Cut 2, 5 1/2″ WOF strips. Fangole into 3 1/2″ widths and cut 24 QSTs. B. Using AQ55027 GO! Triangle in Square -3″ Finished. Cut 1, 6″ x WOF strip. Fan fold into 4 1/4″ and cut 8 triangles.
  4. From white fabric cut: A. Using AQ55777 GO! Quarter Square Triangles – 4 1/2″ Finished Square (shape 4). Cut 9 5 1/2″ WOF strips. Fanfold into 3 1/2″ widths and cut 108 QSTs. B. Using AQ55027 GO! Triangle in Square – 3″ Finished.Cut 4, 5 1/2″ x WOF. Fanfold into 4 1/4″ and cut 72 pairs of side triangles. C. Using AQ55109 GO! Stip Cutter 1 1/4″ (3/4″ Finished). Cut 1, 22″ x WOF. Fanfold and crosscut into 16 strips. D. Using AQ55025 GO! Strip Cutter 2″ (1 1/2″ Finished). Cut 1, 18″ x WOF. Fanfold and crosscut into 8 strips. E. Using AQ55017 or AQ55014 GO! Strip Cutter 2 1/2″ (2″ Finished). Cut 22″ WOF. Fanfold and cut 8 strips. This is the binding.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Using ¼” seam allowance, sew a dark purple quarter square triangle (QST) (Shape 5) onto a white QST (Shape 5) in the orientation in diagram 1. Press seam toward dark purple.
  2. Make a total of 24 units.
  3. Sew the light purple half square triangle (HST) (Shape 4), as pictured in diagram 2. Press seams towards the light purple.
  4. Make a total of 24 of these units.

  1. Sew 12 of these units together to complete the strip below. Make a total of two strips.

  1. Repeat steps 1 to 5 for the light and dark yellow, making a total of two strips.

  1. Repeat steps 1 to 5 for the light and dark aqua, although only making a total of 12 units and 1 strip. This is the centre strip.

  1. Sew a dark red QST (Shape 5) onto a white QST (Shape 5) in the orientation in diagram 3. Press seams towards the dark red.
  2. Make a total of 24 units.
 
  1. Sew the light red half square triangle (HST) (Shape 4), as pictured in diagram 4. Press seams towards the light red.

  2. Make a total of 24 of these units.
  3. Sew 12 of these units together to complete the strip below. Make a total of two strips.

  1. Repeat steps 8 to 12 for the light and dark green, making a total of 2 strips.

  1. Sew together the short ends of 2 x 1 ¼” strips. Make a total of 8 strips. Crosscut these to a length of 54 ½”, using the centre seam as the centre of the strip. Sew them in between the ribbon strips as in diagram 5. TIP: When sewing strips together, to avoid stretching, sew the strip one way, then turn and sew the next seam the other way, as illustrated in diagram 5. When sewing ribbons to white strips, remember to sew in different directions to stop stretching!

  1. Sew 2 x 2″ strips together at short ends, making a total of 4 strips. Cross cut 2 strips to the length of 47″ (top and bottom border) and 2 strips 57 1/2″ (side borders) measuring from centre seam out. Fold the quilt in half and find the centre point of the quit. Add side borders to quilt, matching seams at the centre point of the quilt. Repeat for top borders.

  1. Triangle in Squares – Sew one white side triangle to each side of the coloured triangle as shown in diagram 6.

  1. You will need a total of 72 of these, in alternating colours.
  2. Join these units in four rows, two rows of 17 units for top and bottom and two rows of 19 units for sides, alternating colours as you go.
  3. Sew the top and bottom units to the quilt, matching centres and sewing evenly across.
  4. Sew a 3” square to each end of the side units. Sew the side units to the quilt matching centres and 3” square seams.

Quilting and Finishing

      1. Layer wadding between quilt top and backing
      2. Pin or baste layers together
      3. Machine Quilt as desired
      4. Add binding, mitring corners.

    Can this be made with any of the dies or do you have to have the Qube sets as I own lots of dies and truly do not want to buy the Qubes as well

      You can use any coordinating HST and QST to your liking. You would just need to adjust the borders accordingly. 🙂

    I don’t have an Acuquilt .. yet!

    I notice Bette would like the pattern for the Rainbow Ribbons quilt. I would also like the pattern. Please advise if it is available in the format Bette would like.

      Hi Robyn. Sorry there is no written pattern to use without AccuQuilt. If there was, it was lost in a fire we had 3 years ago, when we lost alot of data. Kind regards Debbie
