Flip-Flopping Around

Summer days and easy ways are not too far away. Brighten your house and bring summer all year round with the Flip-Flopping Around Cushion made by Debbie Lomas.

Materials:

  1. AccuQuilt GO! Big, or GO! Fabric Cutter
  2. AQ55496 GO! Summer Medley
  3. AQ55000 GO! Square – 6 ½”
  4. AQ55045 GO! Rose of Sharon #1 By Sharon Pederson
  5. AQ55025 GO! Strip Cutter – 2” (1 ½” Finished)
  6. AQ55017 GO! Strip Cutter – 2 ½” (2” Finished)
  7. AQ55111 GO! Cutting Mat – 10” x 10”
  8. AQ55137 GO! Cutting Mat – 6” x 6”
  9. AQ55113 GO! Cutting Mat -10” x 24”
  10. 20cm (8”) lime green fabric
  11. 15cm (6”) cork fabric with fusible web for sandals
  12. 10cm x 7cm (4” x 3”) of 4 different blue cotton prints with fusible web for sandal straps
  13. 7cm x 4 cm (3” x 1 ½”) of 4 different green cotton prints with fusible web for flowers
  14. 20cm (8”) blue/green printed fabric for sashing and inner border
  15. 15cm (6”) mid blue fabric for outer border
  16. 20cm (8”) dark blue fabric for binding
  17. 60cm x 60cm (24” x 24”) wadding
  18. 60cm x 60cm (24” x 24”) quilt backing fabric
  19. 60cm of cushion backing fabric
  20. (4) 20cm x 20cm (8” x 8”) squares of tearaway
  21. Teflon sheet for applying cork applique
  22. Sewing machine
  23. Embroidery threads to match the above fabrics
  24. General sewing tools.
  25. 50cm x 50cm (20” x 20”) cushion insert

Cutting Instructions:

All instructions will now be in imperial measurements as per standard quilting language.

  1. Using AQ55000 GO! Square – 6 ½”:
    • Cut (4) squares using the lime green fabric
  2. Using GO! Summer Medley:
    • Cut (8) sandals from the cork fabric with fusible web. Remember to cut these in mirror image so you have a pair.
    • Cut (8) sandal straps from the 4 blue cotton prints with fusible web
  3. Using AQ55045 GO! Rose of Sharon by Sharon Pederson:
    • Cut (8) smallest flower (1”) from the 4 green cotton prints with fusible web
  4. Using AQ55025 GO! Strip Cutter – 2” (1 ½” Finished):
    • Cut (3) 2” strips for sashing and inner border. Crosscut these strips at
      • (2) x 17”
      • (3) x 14”
      • (2) x 6 ½”
  5. Using AQ550117 GO! Strip Cutter- 2 ½” (2” Finished):
    • Cut (2) strips of mid blue fabric for outer border. Crosscut these into
      • (2) x 17”
      • (2) x 21”
  6. Using AQ550117 GO! Strip Cutter- 2 ½” (2” Finished):
    • Cut (2) strips of mid blue fabric for outer border. Crosscut these into
      • (2) x 17”
      • (2) x 21”
    • Cut (3) strips of dark blue fabric for binding

Sewing Instructions

All seams are ¼” (6mm) unless otherwise stated.

  1. Using one green 6 ½” squares, find the centre of the square by folding it in quarters. Arrange the cork sandals in the middle of the block as desired. Refer to illustration Using the Teflon sheet, iron in place.
  2. Arrange the sandal straps sand flowers as per illustration 1. Using the Teflon, press in place.

  1. Repeat for all 4 blocks.
  2. Place a square of tearaway under each block. Using your sewing machine, stitch a small zig-zag, satin, blanket or motif stitch around each shape.
  3. Alternatively, you can use the FREE embroidery downloads of GO! Summer Medley
  4. Carefully remove tearaway from the back of the blocks, making sure not to ‘pull’ at the stitches.
  5. Arrange the blocks in a four patch as shown in illustration 2.

  1. Sew the (2) 2” x 6 1/2’’ blue/green strips to the right-hand side of the two left-hand blocks.
  2. Sew the right-hand side blocks to the other side of these strips. Press seams towards the sashing.
  3. Using (1) 2” x 14” blue/green strip, sew the centre sashing in between these two groups of rows. Press seam towards sashing.
  4. Referring to Illustration 3, sew (2) 2” x 14” the blue/green strips to the top and bottom of the quilt front, matching centres. Press seams outwards.

  1. Sew (2) 2” x 17” blue/green strips to the remaining two sides, matching centres. Press seams outwards.
  2. Referring to Illustration 4, sew (2) 2 ½” x 17” mid-blue strips to the top and bottom of the quilt. Press seams outwards.

  1. Sew (2) 2 ½” x 21” strips to the remaining two edges of the quilt. Press seams outwards.

Quilting and Finishing

  1. Layer batting between quilt top and backing.
  2. Pin or baste layers together.
  3. Quilt as desired.
  4. Trim to 20 ½” x 20 ½”.
Assemble Pillow back
  1. Cut (2) 22” x 24” rectangles from backing fabric.
  2. Press a double fold ½” hem along on 22” length of each rectangle.
  3. Stitch along 22” length to secure.
  4. Trim to 20 ½” x 24”.
  5. Place rectangles right side up, overlap to secure.
  6. Layer quilted pillow top and pillow back wrong sides together and pin.
  7. Attach double folded dark blue binding to pillow top.
  8. Fold the binding back and secure.
  9. Insert pillow form.
