A Cuppa Mug Rug

These cute Cuppa Mug Rugs are perfect for holding your cuppa and a snack. A quick and easy gift project or something for yourself!

Materials:

  1. AccuQuilt GO! Big or GO! Fabric Cutterr
  2. AQ55212 GO! Coffee & Tea Medley
  3. AQ55320 GO! Half Square Triangle 1” Finished Square
  4. AQ55000 GO! Square – 6 ½” Finished
  5. AQ55017 GO! Strip Cutter 2 ½” (2” Finished)
  6. V-Stitch design tea and coffee
  7. 50cm of main fabric
  8. 20cm of colour 1 fabric (green)
  9. 20cm of colour 2 fabric (pink)
  10. Fabric with fusible web attached for embroidery
  11. (3) 6 ½” x 8 ½” of wadding
  12. Embroidery threads
  13. Bobbinfil
  14. Sewing Machine
  15. Matching Sewing Thread
  16. General Sewing Tools
  17. Rotary mat, cutter and ruler

This quantity of fabric is enough to make 3 Mug Rugs.

Embroidery:

  1. Following the embroidery instructions, and your embroidery machine manual, embroidery (3) V-stitch designs onto the main fabric using your applique shapes from AQ55212 GO! Coffee & Tea. Make sure you leave enough room to centre the design when cut to size.

Cutting Instructions:

  1. From main fabric cut:
    1. Using AQ55500 – cut (3) 6 ½” Squares, centring embroidery designs.
    2. Using AQ55320 – cut (28) 1 ½” Half Square Triangles (HST)
    3. Cut (1) 6 ½” strip. Crosscut to make (3) 6 ½” x 8 ½” rectangles for backing
  2. Using Colour 1:
    • Using AQ55320 – Cut (20) 1 ½” HST from one end
    • Using AQ55017- cut (2) 2 ½” strips for binding
  3. Using Colour 2:
    • Using AQ55320 – Cut (24) 1 ½” HST from one end
    • Using AQ55017 – Cut (1) 2 ½” strip for binding

Sewing Instructions:

All seams are ¼” unless otherwise specified. Finished size 6 ½” x 8 ½”
  1. Using Sew (1) main HST to (1) colour 1 HST to make a square. Press. Repeat for (12) colour 1 HST. Unit 1 square. See picture 1.
  2. Sew (1) main HST to (1) colour 2 HST to make a square. Press. Repeat for (16) colour 2 HST. Unit 2 square. See picture 2.
  3. Sew (1) colour 1 HST to (1) colour 2 HST to make a square. Press. Repeat for remaining (8) HST. Unit 3 square. See picture 3.

  1. Using (8) unit 1 and (4) unit 2.
  2. Sew two squares together as shown right. Press. Repeat for remaining two unit 1.
  3. Sew these units together in orientation shown. Press.
  4. Repeat for remaining unit 2 squares. Press.
  5. Sew these blocks in the orientation shown below. Press.

  1. Sew this strip onto the right side of (1) Cup embroidery. Press. Set aside.

  1. Using (4) unit 1 and (8) unit 2.
  2. Sew two squares together as shown right. Press. Repeat for remaining two unit 1.
  3. Sew these units together in orientation shown. Press.
  4. Repeat for remaining unit 2 squares.
  5. Sew these blocks in the orientation shown below. Press.

  1. Sew this strip onto the right side of (1) Cup embroidery. Press. Set aside.

Mug Rug 3

  1. Using (4) unit 2 and (8) unit 3.
  2. Sew two squares together as shown below. Press. Make (2) units.

  1. Sew these blocks in the orientation shown below. Press.

  1. Sew this strip onto the right side of (1) Cup embroidery. Press.

Quilting and Finishing:

  1. Layer wadding between quilt top and backing.
  2. Pin or baste layers together.
  3. Machine quilt if desired.
  4. Add binding, mitring corners.
